So we have had some people asking how Benny is doing. So I thought why not have a blog entry about him. So here he is….

Benny has been with us pretty much from the beginning of our relationship. I adopted him while at Olds College taking the animal health diploma program 14 years ago. So it’s no wonder with his age and that he is a cat that people are wondering about him. Also he is a very social and friendly little fellow, who has mewed his way into people hearts(lol).

In deciding to do this trip he was a big concern. I even said that if he doesn’t come then we don’t go. We had several people offer to take him while we are away. The thought of that was kinda unimaginable…. okay yes he’s just a cat, but he’s a big part of our lives. So we slowing began introducing Benny to the van. First giving him treats for coming into the van. Brushing him inside the van. We had a few overnight sleeps in the van just parked in the back yard. Those did not usually go very well. He was often unsettled. As time went on we started taking him for longer and longer trips. Some went well, others not so much. Our longest trip was to Saskatchewan about a month before we left. He actually did fairly well. So it was confirmed the cat was coming!

As we started the trip he seemed to be excited every time we would stop and open the sliding door, I think he thought it was just another short trip and we are back at home. He’d look around and realize nothing smelled familiar. Nope we are definitely not at home! The first few weeks we had some litterbox issues that have now been sorted out. When we are driving he prefers to stay under the bed, but sometimes will rest on the bed/couch. His favorite spots are in his bed, sometimes he straddles the top of the couch, rolling on the ground outside the van. He always wants to go exploring, we keep him on a leash and are training him to walk with us. I think he seems more comfortable in the woods versus in cities. He has been practicing his skill in hunting chipmunks! But is most happy tucked in the blankets somewhere in this tiny bed with the two of us.

So you can see Benny is just as much a part of this trip as Paul or I. I’m sure people are thinking that we should just have some kids already!! But we are pretty happy right now…. Maybe a little cat crazy but oh well!
